Objectives

Integrating People, Products, and Processes

The Best Practices Research Alliance takes a whole house systems approach to achieving homes that give more™ – looking at product technologies and how they are applied cost-effectively and practically through construction, and business research management processes.

Within this framework, the Alliance focuses on achieving five long-term objectives:

  1. Supporting 25% More Energy Efficient Homebuilding – By identifying and working through business and marketing barriers that exist, we will help champion the universal adoption of 25% savings levels.
  2. Making 50% energy-efficiency viable – Alliance members rely on existing technologies and construction practices proven to reach this target. Research efforts, therefore, focus on developing both research and prototype test homes and on validating and perfecting largely what's already known to improve energy efficiency.
  3. Target 70% or more savings – This savings level is an important milestone toward achieving our goal of zero energy homes. It will require stepping up efforts to discover, develop, and refine technologies and processes. The Alliance will take on this challenge through advanced research programs, developing research homes that incorporate conservation and renewable energy strategies.
  4. Defining Business Management Models – This will require new skills and a new way of thinking. Builders will need to know how to manage the construction of these homes on a day-to-day basis and how to incorporate these discoveries on a production scale, so that they continue to be cost-effective and marketable throughout a builder’s team. Therefore, our research will also center on creating and sharpening business models that builders can adopt to produce these homes both practically and economically.
  5. Increasing Market Awareness – We will also reach out through media channel partnerships to educate the market on the features and benefits of these homes, with the goal of developing greater market awareness and accelerating progress towards making new standards of home quality, efficiency, and responsibility a practical, everyday reality.
