Harvard Communities builds semi-custom
homes in the Denver, Colorado area that are at least 40 percent
more energy efficient than typical new homes built to code.
Their latest community, Stapleton, includes a Near-Zero Energy
Home (NZEH) designed in conjunction with the Department of Energy's
Building America program. The NZEH uses 70 to 80 percent less
energy than typical homes, features more insulation and air
sealing, a high efficient air conditioner, a heat recovery
ventilator, high-tech duct system, high efficient lighting package,
and a large roof-mounted solar electric system. The home has earned
a LEED Gold/Platinum designation.
Encouraged by the grand opening event for the NZEH, Harvard's
President, John Keith said, "This massive turnout indicated to me
that energy efficient homes and solar homes are of great interest
to a lot of people -- maybe even more than we've thought. It was
great reinforcement that Harvard's on-going quest to design, build
and market ultra energy efficient homes is a good thing not only
for the planet and our economy, but for our business as well."
Harvard is one of the first builders in the country to offer
roof mounted solar electric systems as a standard feature. An
accomplished high performance homebuilder since 1992, Harvard
Communities is a recipient of the prestigious Green Builder of the
Year award from the Homebuilders Association of Metro Denver.
