Exploring delivery of energy efficient homes at the production level
With each new change in code, homebuilders will be required to improve the energy efficiency of their homes by 15%. Many homebuilders are also using standards and certification programs like ENERGY STAR® for Homes, Builder's Challenge, NAHB Green, and LEED to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market. Each of these programs comes with its own set of criteria, and technical and business challenges to overcome.
For builders who deliver homes at the production level, rather than custom projects, these challenges result in wide-scale changes to their business that can be difficult to implement. Builders don't invest much in research and development themselves, so any support they can receive - whether it's from industry experts, suppliers, or the insights of other builders - is beneficial.
Some Alliance members collaborate in building prototype homes and test communities to work through these challenges with the support of IBACOS and Building America. Results are shared within the Alliance and with the industry at large. Others discuss what they're doing in their businesses, share ideas, participate in educational sessions, and seek the advice and insights of other members in the Alliance community.
