A collaborative research partner in
the Alliance, East Liberty Development, Inc. (ELDI) is a nonprofit
community development corporation that's focused on revitalizing
East Liberty, a once vibrant inner city neighborhood in the East
End of Pittsburgh, PA. ELDI works to increase business,
promote public safety, improve public spaces, and create a positive
image for the community it serves.
A key strategy that ELDI employs is the design, development and
construction of new, high performance, single family homes. Maelene
Myers, Executive Director of ELDI, says "Our new homes have
terrific prices, but even more importantly, the energy efficiency
and minimal maintenance of these homes will be saving homeowner's
money for years to come."Since involving IBACOS, a Building America
team lead, as a technical partner, the developer has identified the
right mix of building practices and technologies to deliver homes
that use up to 40 percent less energy than comparables in the area
that have been built to code. ELDI has committed to
constructing all of their homes to this level of energy efficiency
- approximately 300 homes are planned.
In the photo above, Ernie Hogan of ELDI is sharing lessons he's
learned developing energy efficient homes in an urban infill
setting during a house tour with other members of the Alliance.
