Identifying operational guidelines and best practices for homebuilders
Finding the right technologies and packaging them together to deliver higher performance is only part of the equation. Delivering energy efficient homes consistently and profitably requires the homebuilder to rethink the way they organize and run their business. Each stage of the process has to be examined: Planning and Development, Design and Purchasing, Construction, Marketing and Sales, and Customer Care.
Lessons and best practices can be gathered from builders who have gone through or are going through the process. And, a lot of the ideas behind the business and quality management principles that manufacturers and service companies employ - like Six Sigma and lean manufacturing - are also transferrable. But, at this point, no one has captured all of this information and put it together to create a clear roadmap homebuilders can follow to more effectively organize and manage their businesses.
Alliance members are working together to do just that. Some Alliance builders are allowing us to go with them on their journey as they make energy efficient homes a core part of their business, documenting their change management process and capturing best practices along the way. Early adopters are letting us in on what they've already learned. And others are simply sharing their struggles and successes in open discussions to further inform our research. Why would they do this? No one has all of the answers, and they're all looking to learn from each other.
IBACOS and other business and quality management experts will take what we learn from this research, analyze it, and put the information together into operational guidelines and tools homebuilders can use to more effectively run their businesses.
