Today, very low -- even zero energy -- homes exist. At least in some markets. But, most builders can't figure out how to deliver them consistently and cost-effectively on a production scale, and most buyers can't afford the initial price tag.
Thr
ough collaborative research with members of the Alliance and the Department of Energy’s Building America program, IBACOS is working to identify production-friendly solutions that will allow homebuilders to create durable, affordable homes that consume little to no energy. On this path, there are three big challenges: 1) How to create an airtight, high R-value shell in a cost-conscious, production environment; 2) What happens to the HVAC system after that high R-shell drops the load substantially; and 3) Now that the space conditioning load is minimized, how do you take advantage of system synergies to reduce the second biggest load in the house, making domestic hot water?
This webinar addresses the means and methods IBACOS is using to answer these questions. The Energy Efficiency Lab Home, which IBACOS built with S&A Homes in Pittsburgh, is highlighted as a research case study.
